Arizona Legislature now Latino-bashing
TUCSON -- Arizona's habit of immigrant-bashing has morphed into Latino-bashing. It isn't just Latinos who will suffer if it continues.
Consider this: According to 2010 census data, 43 percent of Arizonans under age 18 are Latino.
This is a fact and an opportunity. Arizonans should support schools that will prepare these young people to help lead the state into a bright new dawn.

SB 1070 backlash spurs Hispanics to join Democrats

Many of those registering are young Latino citizens whose parents may be undocumented.

Arizona Immigration Law: A look at bill's impact one year later
The neighbors pointed at a small green house on the west side of Phoenix and said the man who cut off part of his finger lived inside. Sure enough, a man came out with toilet paper wound around the index finger of his left hand.
He said he had been cutting meat at a restaurant around the corner when he accidently sliced off a hunk of his flesh. More than 24 hours later, blood kept soaking through the toilet paper, and his finger still throbbed. This raised an obvious question: Why didn't he go to the hospital?
"Because I don't have papers," said the man, who would give only his first name, Ramon.

Deportation divides Orange County family
"Make sure that they have everything they need," she prayed. "Make sure that nothing happens to them because they are going to be all alone."
That was May 8, 2008.
A day earlier, Martha had been separated from her six children – then ages 1 to 23 – when she was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. At 6 a.m., at the family's Orange County home, she was handcuffed and taken to the ICE facility in Santa Ana.
Her husband, Juan Manuel, a welder, was already at work, but he was also ordered to appear at the facility. By day's end, the couple – in the United States for 19 years – were deported to Tijuana. They left behind their six children, three undocumented and three U.S. citizens, on their own.
Increasingly, as more undocumented parents are deported, such separations are becoming common, leaving families with a painful decision – leave U.S. citizen children behind, or pull them out of the only country they've ever known.
In the past decade, the number of U.S. citizens born to undocumented immigrants more than doubled, to 4.5 million, according to data released last month by the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research organization.

Minorities gain ground in Texas suburban counties
More than 60 years later, Moore is still mayor, but almost everything else around here has changed.
Richmond now sits in the center of one of the fastest growing counties in the nation's fastest growing mega-state.
The Houston suburb is also one of the most racially diverse — minorities account for almost two-thirds of its population. In 1950, about three-fourths were white.
Fort Bend County is a convenient microcosm for what's happening across America, where 85 percent of the population growth has come from minorities over the last decade. Rather than take over neighborhoods abandoned by whites, minorities are increasingly the first-time home buyers in neighborhoods drawing multiple ethnicities.

My inclination has been to think that it’s a matter of side-show politics taking center stage. State legislators have been lining up to propose and debate Arizona-type immigration bills (in 19 states at last count) because they made campaign promises and because it’s the kind of issue that politicians like. Newt Gingrich famously said that conservative politicians should find issues with 80 percent approval, stand next to them and wave. Immigration bill concerns Kentucky's Latino community
Immigration bill concerns Kentucky's Latino community
BY JACK BRAMMER
THE LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER
Faced with the possibility that state lawmakers might pass a bill to crack down on illegal immigrants, more than 100 people, mostly Latinos, turned out Sunday to learn more about the measure.
Many of the answers they received did nothing to relieve their anxiety.
"There is a sense of fear, a sense of rejection in the Latino community about this bill," said Andrés Cruz, editor and publisher of La Voz, an English/Spanish newspaper with a circulation of 10,000 that reports on Central Kentucky's Latin American community. "To me, the bill is simply political pandering."
Cruz and Marilyn Daniel, a volunteer attorney for Maxwell Street Legal Clinic, held a two-hour informational meeting about the controversial bill at the Lexington Public Library.
During the meeting, the group also learned about a rally at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 8 at the Capitol in Frankfort to oppose the legislation.

Illegal immigration declines dramatically in South Carolina
Illegal immigration declines dramatically in South Carolina
BY JAMES ROSEN
MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS
WASHINGTON — As South Carolina considers enacting its own version of Arizona's tough immigration law, the number of illegal immigrants in the state has dropped significantly in recent years.
While the national total has dropped only slightly since 2007 — from 12 million to 11.2 million, or 6.7 percent — South Carolina's share of illegal immigrants has declined by 21.4 percent — from 70,000 to 55,000 — in the same period.
Jeff Passell, a demographer with the Pew Research Center who wrote the Washington group's report released Tuesday, said economic woes in South Carolina and beyond have slowed the influx of undocumented workers from Mexico and other countries.

Man pleads guilt in actress marriage fraud case
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES -- A musician accused of marrying a Mexican-born actress so she could remain in the United States has pleaded guilty to lying on an immigration form.
U.S. attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek says Kent Ross appeared in court Friday and will be sentenced April 25.
He has admitted to lying about living with actress Fernanda Romero, who had a bit part in the film "Drag Me to Hell" and is best known for her role on the Mexican soap opera "Eternamente Tuya."
Prosecutors are not seeking prison time for either Ross or Romero, who pleaded guilty to making a false statement in a Jan. 28 immigration proceeding.
The pair were arrested in April 2010 and accused of marriage fraud. A trial last year ended when jurors failed to reach a verdict.

Letters: Immigration, redevelopment, a memoriam
Several letters to the Editor with opinions on immigration.
Toughen enforcement of immigration laws
I am not surprised by “Report: 11.2 million were in the U.S. illegally” (Feb. 2). This administration is not really doing enough to enforce our immigration laws. If illegal immigrantsare caught, they are sometimes let go for what is called humanitarian reasons; in other words, they know they have a family at home that’s here illegally.
by Ana Zuniga-Maus
Twice recently, Congressman Brian Bilbray has been given space in the Union-Tribune to present his views on illegal immigration (“Costs of illegal immigration are threat to lives, economy” Dialog, Dec. 26, and “The human, financial costs of illegal immigration,” Dialog, Jan. 30).
by Bob McCleary
Poway
I agree with Brian Bilbray’s conclusions in his Jan. 30 Opinion piece.
There is one incontestable fact – if there are 12 million to 20 million illegal or undocumented aliens living in the U.S., they have jobs or they wouldn’t be here.
