This article follows up on the story about the controversial Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio. The article talks about how the "veteran Republican lawman" has probably felt the "change" promised by the new administration more than anyone, as he is now under investigation by the Justice Department for the unconstitutional methods he employs against illegal immigrants. Arpaio is also under fire for discriminating against Latinos.
The fact that this investigation of Arpaio, no matter how legitimate it is, has been conducted solely by Democrats, has lead to criticism by both parties that this has become more of a political issue than one truly about upholding the rights provided by the Constitution. There are also fears that the hearings against Arpaio will "exploit racial fears for political gains" ...on both sides. Sheriff Arpaio claims to be being made the poster boy for the anti-287(g) movement. 287 (g) is a "federal bill that gives federal immigration-enforcement authority to Arpaio and other local authorities around the nation."
Arpaio is set to have a hearing in April.
